Italian Nuclear Arsenal

Italy does not possess its own nuclear weapons but participates in NATO’s nuclear sharing program, hosting U.S. B61 nuclear bombs at its airbases. The Italian Air Force is responsible for delivering these weapons if required under NATO’s strategic deterrence policy. Italy maintains a capable fleet of aircraft capable of deploying nuclear weapons as part of the alliance’s defense strategy.

Italy hosts B61 gravity bombs at its airbases, which can be deployed using Italian fighter jets in a NATO-assigned mission. These nuclear weapons serve as a key component of European deterrence against potential threats. The bombs are under U.S. control but can be used by Italian forces in a wartime scenario.

The Tornado IDS is a multirole fighter capable of carrying and delivering NATO’s B61 nuclear bombs. Although aging, it remains an important asset in Italy’s defense strategy, ensuring nuclear deterrence capability. Italy plans to transition nuclear-capable roles to the F-35A in the coming years.
